In <em>In the Body of The Sturgeon<\/em> begleiten wir die kleine isolierte Besatzung eines amerikanischen U-Boots w\u00e4hrend der letzten Tage des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Irgendwo im Pazifik stationiert, verfolgt die Mannschaft die Verlautbarung des amerikanischen Pr\u00e4sidenten Harry Truman zum Atombombenabwurf \u00fcber Hiroshima. Es ist hei\u00df und feucht, und die Seeleute suchen der klaustrophobischen Eint\u00f6nigkeit zu entfliehen. Nebst Freunden und Familienmitgliedern schl\u00fcpfen die K\u00fcnstler selbst in selbstgebautem Set in verschiedene Rollen. Kost\u00fcmiert und mit aufgeschminkten Stoppeln, Falten und Muskeln versehen, trinkt Mary Reid Kelley als Matrose Benzin oder unterh\u00e4lt den Rest der Crew mit einer Art Burleske.<\/p>\n<p>Wichtiger Bestandteil von Mary Reid Kelleys und Patrick Kelleys Arbeiten ist eine an Wortspielen reiche Dichtkunst. Als Vorlage f\u00fcr das Skript von <em>In the Body of The Sturgeon<\/em> diente das 1885 von Henry Wadsworth Longfellow verfasste Heldenepos <em>The Song of Hiawatha<\/em>, ein fantastisches Poem \u00fcber das Leben amerikanischer Ureinwohner in einer vorindustriellen Idylle. Einzelne Verse dieses Langgedichts werden zu einer Textcollage zusammengef\u00fcgt und finden auf schnitttechnischer Ebene ihre Entsprechung in den sprunghaften \u201eJump-Cuts\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley produce unmistakeable, graphically stylised black-and-white videos which move between painting, theatre and animation. In <\/em>In the Body of The Sturgeon<em> we accompany the tiny, isolated community of an American submarine crew in the last days of the Second World War. Stationed somewhere in the Pacific, they listen to the announcement by the American president Harry Truman about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It is hot and humid, and the sailors are trying to distract themselves from the claustrophobic monotony. In a set they have built themselves, the artists slip into the various roles of the story together with friends and family members, all costumed with painted-on stubbles, wrinkles and muscles. We see Mary Reid Kelley as a sailor drinking gasoline or entertaining the rest of the crew with a sort of burlesque show.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An important element of Mary Reid Kelley\u2019s and Patrick Kelley\u2019s works is a poetic art rich in wordplay and constituting the spoken text of the narratives. Serving as a model for In the Body of The Sturgeon<em> is the heroic epic <\/em>The Song of Hiawatha<em> written in 1885 by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a fantasy about the life of Native Americans in a preindustrial idyll.
