Martha Atienza arbeitet prim\u00e4r in ihren beiden Heimatl\u00e4ndern, den Niederlanden und den\u00a0 Philippinen. Die visuelle Auseinandersetzung mit dem Meer und seiner Erforschung ist in ihrer k\u00fcnstlerischen Praxis gekoppelt mit dem ethnografischen Interesse an den Einwohnern ihrer Heimatgegend, der philippinischen Insel Bantayan. Gest\u00fctzt auf ihre bikulturelle Herkunft, veranschaulicht sie in ihren Arbeiten die Abh\u00e4ngigkeit der V\u00f6lker vom Meer und seinen Ressourcen sowie die politischen und \u00f6konomischen Konsequenzen an beiden Polen des ehemaligen Kolonialverh\u00e4ltnisses. Das allj\u00e4hrliche philippinische Fest Ati-Atihan,\u00a0 welches zu Zeiten der spanischen Kolonialherrschaft seine Christianisierung erfahren hat, ist ein Festzug mit Musik, Tanz und humorvollen Darstellungen tagespolitischer Angelegenheiten. Einmal im Jahr werden so in einfallsreichen Kost\u00fcmen wichtige gesellschaftliche Ereignisse und Debatten karikiert, wobei der allt\u00e4gliche \u00dcberlebenskampf, die Suche nach Identit\u00e4t und das Bed\u00fcrfnis nach Kreativit\u00e4t den Hauptantrieb bilden.<\/p>\n

Seit 2010 beobachtet die K\u00fcnstlerin eine zunehmende Ver\u00e4nderung der Prozession \u2013 die im Zusammenhang mit dem Klimawandel immer geringer ausfallenden Fischfangertr\u00e4ge rauben den Inselbewohnern die Freude am Fest. Statt Zeit zum Feiern zu haben, m\u00fcssen sie arbeiten, um ihre Familien ern\u00e4hren zu k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n

Martha Atienza works primarily in her two native countries, the Netherlands and the Philippines. A visual response to oceanic research is combined with an ethnographical interest in the inhabitants of her homeland \u2014 the Philippine island of Bantayan. Her artistic practice, accompanied by a social and ecological commitment, illustrates her bicultural origins in the dependence of peoples on the sea and its resources as well as in the impact of colonisation on both ends of the spectrum.<\/em><\/p>\n

The annual Philippine festival Ati-Atihan, which was christianised by the Spanish colonial powers, is a celebratory procession with music, dance and a humorous depiction of contemporary political issues in the Philippines. Once each year, themes of grave import are caricatured in imaginative costumes which reflect the struggle for survival, the search for identity and the need for creativity.<\/p>\n

Ever since 2010, the artist has been observing an increasing change in the procession: the deteriorating catch of fish, together with climate change, is robbing the inhabitants of their joy in the festival. Instead of celebrating, they decide to continue working, in order to feed their hungry families.<\/p>\n
