——————————————————————————————————–

The Jellyfish Barge by the Italian think tank PNAT is a floating greenhouse for hydroculture. The octagon-shaped prototype presented here is a module. Further modules can dock as needed. It can be used on urban, suburban, and rural bodies of water. The Jellyfish Barge facilitates an efficient production of foodstuffs independently of characteristics of the soil, and it provides access to sources of energy. The plant cultivation requires only limited water resources. Photovoltaic cells provide energy for purifying salt water, brackish water, or polluted water as needed. The Jellyfish Barge is equipped with inexpensive technology and produced from simple materials. It can also be easily reproduced.

PNAT arose as a think tank from an initiative of Florence University in response to changes in the environment, the exhaustion of natural resources, and a constantly growing global population. Biologists and architects combine plants, research, science, and creativity in an innovative manner in order to meet the challenges of the future. Plants constitute 99 percent of the earth’s biomass. The precise study and imitation of the behavior patterns of plants gives rise to new relationships between natural and artificial environments.

The Jellyfish Barge was presented in 2015 at the EXPO in Milan in the framework of the exhibition Feeding the Accelerator at the U.S. Pavilion and, among other tributes, won an award from the United Nations.

——————————————————————————————————–

PNAT (IT)

Foundation 2014 at the University of Florence
Gründung 2014 an der Universität Florenz

Biologists / Biologen:
Stefano Mancuso, Camilla Pandolfi, Elisa Azzarello, Elisa Masi
LINV (International Laboratory of Plant Neurobiology, Florence)

Architects / Architekten:
Christiana Favretto, Antonio Giradi
Studiomobile, Treviso

Awards and prizes / Auszeichnungen und Preise:
2015 International Award on Innovative Ideas and Technologies on Agribusiness promoted by UNIDO and CNR; First place at the Start-up competition Giovani talenti imprenditoriali promoted by the Italian Agriculture Ministry; First place at the competition Idee innovative e tecnologie per l’agribusiness organized by UN and CNR; Jellyfish Barge has been selected by the US Pavillion at Expo for an acceleration program within the project Feeding the Accelerator; Second price at the United Nations Economic Commission For Europe (UNECE) award Ideas4Change; COOP selected Jellyfish Barge as one of the project to be exposed with a scaled model at EXPO, in the Future Food District 2014 First prize at the award Impresa, Lavoro, Innovazione by Regione Toscana

www.pnat.net
www.studiomobile.org
www.linv.org

Jellyfish Barge auf der EXPO Mailand in 2015, ©PNAT Please scroll down for english version!
