Der amerikanische K\u00fcnstler Ryan Trecartin greift in seinen Videoarbeiten verschiedene Str\u00f6mungen der aktuellen Popul\u00e4rkultur auf. Er beschreibt und hinterfragt den Stellenwert digitaler Kommunikation in Form von radikalen Szenarien.<\/p>\n

Das Video CENTER JENNY<\/em> (2013) konfrontiert den Betrachter mit einer explosionsartig \u00fcbersteigerten \u00c4sthetik, die sich allseits pr\u00e4senter Medienformate bedient. Vor dem Hintergrund der Selfiekultur kombiniert Trecartin Einfl\u00fcsse aus digitalen R\u00e4umen wie Youtube, Reality TV, soziale Netzwerke und Videospiele, um in Folge ein Universum zu kreieren, das einer digitalen Dr\u00f6hnung gleicht. Die darin agierenden Protagonisten \u2013 weibliche Avatare \u2013 tragen alle den Namen Jenny und bilden, je nach Entwicklungsstufe, verschiedene Gruppen. Je h\u00f6her die Entwicklungsstufe, desto n\u00e4her r\u00fcckt das Ziel: In Form der perfekten Nachahmung eines Ideals, auch \u201ethe source\u201c genannt, eine allgemeine Gleichartigkeit zu erreichen. Demnach f\u00fchrt die Inszenierung von exzentrischer Selbstdarstellung, netzbasierten Rollenspielen und Transgender-Identit\u00e4ten nicht zu der Herausbildung einer individuellen Pers\u00f6nlichkeit. Vielmehr wird eine formale und inhaltliche Gleichschaltung thematisiert, die gleicherma\u00dfen verst\u00f6rt und fasziniert.<\/p>\n

In his video works, the American artist Ryan Trecartin takes up various trends of current popular culture. He describes and investigates the status of digital communication in the form of radical scenarios.<\/p>\n

The video CENTER JENNY<\/em> (2013) confronts the viewer with an explosion-like, exaggerated aesthetic that makes use of omnipresent media formats. Against the background of the selfie culture, Trecartin combines influences from such digital spaces as YouTube, reality TV, social networks, and video games in order to subsequently create a universe that is equivalent to a digital drug high. The protagonists therein \u2013 female avatars \u2013 are all called Jenny and, according to their respective degrees of development, form various groups. The higher the developmental stage, the closer comes the goal: to reach a general uniformity in the form of the perfect imitation of an ideal that is also called \u201cthe source\u201d. Thus the staging of eccentric self-depiction, Internet-based role-play, and transgender identities do not lead to the crystallization of an individual personality. Instead there is the investigation of a formal and consensual homogeneity that is disturbing and fascinating in equal measure.<\/p>\n
