——————————————————————————————————–

In his works, Jon Rafman investigates the breadth and impact of digitalization. His videos, installations, and photographs cast light on the inexorable blurring of the borders between virtuality and reality. For example, he examines the question as to what an Internet user who spends much of his time in front of the computer screen considers to be reality, or what the material available in the worldwide space of the Internet has to say about our reality.

The video Mainsqueeze (2014) consists of visual material found on the Internet. Popular platforms such as the American bulletin board 4chan or YouTube are the sources from which Jon Rafman selects and rearranges his material. The voice-over accompanying the images consists of quotations from literature and Internet commentaries. Under the loosely connecting motto “squeeze,” both popular and bizarre Internet phenomena are joined into a visual sequence that challenges the viewer. The video oscillates between banality and disturbance, just as the overwhelmingly vast space of the Internet ranges from innocence to perversity. The possibility of penetrating into increasingly absurd worlds from a sheltered place at the computer is both fascinating and repelling. The search for new visual kicks is the lifeblood of many Internet communities. In his compositions, Jon Rafman offers not so much an evaluation of these phenomena as a melancholic appraisal of a both digital and real state of affairs.

——————————————————————————————————–

JON RAFMAN (CA)

* 1981 in Montreal
Lives | lebt in Montreal

Selected solo exhibitions | Einzelausstellungen (Auswahl)
2016 Jon Rafman, Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster 2015 Jon Rafman, Zabludowicz Collection, London; Jon Rafman, Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal 2014 The end of the end of the end, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; Jon Rafman: Mainsqueeze, Plymouth Rock, Zürich 2012 Jon Rafman, Palais de Tokyo, Paris; The Nine Eyes of Google Street View, Saatchi Gallery, London

Selected group shows | Gruppenausstellungen (Auswahl)
2016 Will Aballe Projects, Vancouver; Berlin Biennale, Berlin; Manifesta 11, Zürich; Dreaming Mirrors/Dreaming Screens, Sprüth Magers, Berlin 2015 Biennale de Lyon, France; Moscow Biennial; Unorthodox, The Jewish Museum, New York; The Metabolic Age!, Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires; What Remains, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Digital Conditions, Kunstverein Hannover 2014 What Is a Photograph? International Center of Photography, New York; Science Fiction: New Death, FACT, Liverpool; Art Post-Internet, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Power Ball, The Power Plant, Toronto; Scripted Spaces, Martos Gallery, Los Angeles

Bibliography | Publikationen
2016 Infinite Lives.
