Luanda, die Hauptstadt Angolas, gilt aktuell als eine der teuersten St\u00e4dte der Welt. Seit Ende des B\u00fcrgerkriegs im Jahr 2002, hat sich das sogenannte \u201eDubai Afrikas\u201c mit Hilfe chinesischer Bauinvestoren zu einer Megacity entwickelt. Binelde Hyrcan visualisiert in seinen Videos die negativen Auswirkungen des unkontrollierten Wachstums seiner Heimatstadt. Die humorvollen absurd-ironischen Inszenierungen untergraben den durch Reichtum erzielten Status von Macht und thematisieren die Schattenseiten der afrikanischen Metropole wie Armut, Luftverschmutzung und Verkehrschaos.<\/p>\n

Cambeck<\/em> (2012) zeigt vier angolanische Jungen, die reiche Erwachsene spielen und in ihrer aus Sand gebauten Limousine umherfahren. Sie diskutieren \u00fcber Umzugspl\u00e4ne in die USA, italienische Ehefrauen, Brasilien und Geld. F\u00fcr einen kurzen Moment weicht die Alltagsrealit\u00e4t der Illusion eines \u201egood life\u201c. White Rain<\/em> (2013) dokumentiert eine Performance. Einen Tag lang thront Hyrcan auf einem erh\u00f6hten Stuhl an prek\u00e4rem Ort. Vor einem Regierungsgeb\u00e4ude ist der Sitz unter einem Baum platziert, der eine Vielzahl an V\u00f6geln beherbergt. Immer wieder wird der schwarze Anzug des K\u00fcnstlers mit wei\u00dfen Flecken von Vogelkot bedeckt.<\/p>\n

Im Video Apneia<\/em> (2012) f\u00e4hrt Hyrcan im Taucheranzug und mit Atemger\u00e4t auf einem Skateboard durch Luanda. Die Fahrt f\u00fchrt entlang der Buchtpromenade und durch angrenzende Viertel, wo alte und neu renovierte Kolonialbauten im Wechsel mit Hochh\u00e4usern das Stra\u00dfenbild pr\u00e4gen. Ihm folgt ein Begleiter in Chauffeuruniform, ebenfalls auf einem Skateboard.<\/p>\n

Luanda, the capital of Angola, is said to be one of the most expensive cities in the world at the moment. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, the so-called \u201cDubai of Africa\u201d has developed into a megacity with the help of Chinese investors. In his videos, Binelde Hyrcan visualizes the negative effects of the uncontrolled growth of his native city. The humorous and simultaneously absurd-ironical stagings undermine the status of power attained through wealth and give expression to the shadowy sides of the African metropolis such as poverty, air pollution, and traffic chaos.<\/p>\n

Cambeck<\/em> (2012) shows four Angolan boys who play at being rich adults and drive around in their limousine built of sand. They talk about plans for moving to the USA, Italian wives, Brazil, and money. For a brief moment, everyday reality recedes before the illusion of the „good life“. White Rain<\/em> (2013) documents a performance. For an entire day, Hyrcan sits enthroned on an oversized chair at a precarious location. The seat is placed in front of a governmental building beneath a tree in which
\na large number of birds are perched. The black suit of the artist is repeatedly besmirched with white splotches from bird droppings.<\/p>\n

In the video Apneia<\/em> (2012), Hyrcan rides a skateboard through Luanda while wearing a diver\u2019s suit and a breathing apparatus. The route follows the promenade alongside the bay and through adjoining districts where old and newly renovated colonial buildings alternate with highrise buildings to define the view of the streets. He is followed by an attendant wearing a chauffeur\u2019s uniform and likewise riding a skateboard.<\/p>\n
