——————————————————————————————————–

In everyday movement through city spaces, traversing a crosswalk is a routine action that scarcely receives attention. So it is all the more remarkable to experience the video Work No. 1701 (2013) by the British artist Martin Creed, who presents seven persons who are able only with difficulty to cross an intersection in New York. The artistic intention, however, does not consist in a disrespectful display of their disabilities. Instead the crosswalk becomes a public stage for these individuals who, without recourse to mechanical support, cross the street while partly limping, hopping, or sliding backwards on their bellies. Martin Creed, who is also a musician, accompanies this movement performance with the song You Return from his second album Mind Trap.

On the one hand, this special staging indicates Martin Creed’s interest in the various types of human movement which are repeatedly the theme of his artistic production. On the other hand, he likewise focuses on the impact of public spaces by undermining daily perceptual processes that occur unconsciously.

——————————————————————————————————–

MARTIN CREED (GB)

* 1969 in Wakefield
Lives | lebt in London

Selected solo exhibitions | Einzelausstellungen (Auswahl)
2016 What You Find, Hauser & Wirth Somerset; Martin Creed, Public Art Fund, Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York; Martin Creed, Galerie im Taxipalais, Innsbruck 2015 Martin Creed, Peder Lund, Oslo; Martin Creed, Michael Lett, Auckland; Work No. 360: Half the air in a given space, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; Martin Creed, Kunstverein Heilbronn 2014 Martin Creed: What’s the Point of It?, Hayward Gallery, London; Martin Creed, Johnen Galerie, Berlin 2013 Martin Creed, Galleria Lorcan O’Neill, Rom; Work No. 1513: Half the air in a given space, THEMUSEUM, Ontario; Artist Rooms: Martin Creed, Work No. 227: The lights going on and off’, Tate Britain, London 2012 Martin Creed Plays Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Martin Creed, Museo de Arte de Lima

Selected group shows | Gruppenausstellungen (Auswahl)
2016 Home Improvements, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco 2015 REFLECTIONS: Creed & LeWitt, National Galleries Scotland Edinburgh; Stories We Tell Ourselves, Aspen Art Museum; Beneath the Surface, De La Cruz Contemporary Art Space, Miami; Akakor, Baró Galeria, São Paulo

Selected bibliography | Publikationen (Auswahl)
2014 Martin Creed: What’s the point of it? Cliff Lauson, Paul Morley, Hayward Gallery Publishing, London; Art or Sound, Germano Celant, Foudazione Prada, Mailand; 2010 Martin Creed.
