Stars of the Yugoslavian art and architecture scene were commissioned to design these monuments in order to give expression to historically resonant
and ideologically charged sites of admonishment. Near the Serbian city of Niš, three upraised concrete fists recall the prisoners who lost their lives at the concentration camp Crveni Krst.

Los Carpinteros, namely the pair of collaborating Cuban artists Marco Antonio Castillo Valdes and Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez, transformed this monument in a large-format, watercolored triptych into a sort of modular architecture composed of Lego pieces. The materiality of concrete, with its implication of long duration, is transferred to the state of a temporary structure, as if new commemorative sites could be created out of these pieces according to momentary need or ideological requirement. The middle pictorial field, normally reserved in a triptych for the core narrative, is empty and points toward
the fragmentariness that characterizes the reception of such monuments in today’s politically more liberal era. Los Carpinteros’ sculptures and interventions in public spaces are considered to be icons of masterful, evocative, and sometimes narratively cheerful energy.

——————————————————————————————————–

LOS CARPINTEROS (CU)
Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez
Marco Antonio Castillo Valdes

*1969 in Cuba | *1971 in Cuba
Live | leben in Havana and | und in Madrid

Selected solo exhibitions | Einzelausstellungen (Auswahl)
2016 Los Carpinteros: O Objeto Vital, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Brasilia; Los Carpinteros, MUAC Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Artist Room: Los Carpinteros, Museum Folkwang, Essen 2015 Los Carpinteros, MARCO Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey; The Globe, Victoria and Albert Museum, London 2014 Yelmo, Museum Folkwang, Essen; Pellejo, Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art, Toronto; Los Carpinteros.
